At which point middle aged straight ladies and discerning gay men everywhere blurted: What what? To be informed by a young person that older people are de sexed, half dead and dried up, mashing their toothless gums as they shuffle painfully and boringly to the grave that’s nothing new.

But suggesting that Matt Lauer is anything but a hottie? Them’s fightin’ words!

Cyrus may have made these ageist, obnoxious comments from a place of pure and artless stupidity, in the same way that has lately been exercising his inalienable right to behave like a hormonally compromised twit. They aren’t the first nominal adults (Cyrus is 20, Bieber 19) to lack the maturity, the empathy or the imagination to think outside their own confining bubbles of sycophants and sex.

What’s more, she might have been joking. Flirting, even and successfully so, given Lauer’s wide smile through the whole ludicrous thing. is 52. Does she really consider him a neutered old fart? Or his co star in “Gravity,” 49 year old : Her legs in that movie inspire nothing less than awe, and I say that as one of the aforementioned straight chicks.

Cyrus would do well to emulate,” the hubba hubba 68 year old Oscar winner, and see what happens. (Google helpfully rounds out the phrase with the word “bikini.”)

That “Today” appearance is, in all likelihood, just Cyrus’ latest shrewd effort at rebranding herself and marketing her music. Sex sells. No shockers there. The question is, what kind of sex? Not the kind that makes babies who grow up to be Mileys; not the kind http://www.cheapjerseys11.com/ between grandparents that enriches and enlivens lifelong intimacy, imperfect bodies be damned; not any kind, really, that’s practiced between actual people in the actual world beyond the steamy fantasyland of contemporary pop culture.

That one, brusque three letter word is as elastic and forceful, as transformative and loaded, as the act itself. It means different things in different contexts and in the context of an all grown up Disney alumna trying to drum up publicity for her latest album (titled “Bangerz,” and I’m guessing she doesn’t mean the English breakfast sausage), sex means trash. It means twerking against ‘s naughty bits at the

She knows what she’s doing. She’s empowering herself or so she believes.

And this, I think, is the real cause for outrage in Cyrus’ numbnut comments. It’s not her assessment of over the hill libidos, an opinion she just might rethink in another, oh, 20 years. It’s not even her cynicism and business savvy. It’s her belief that she can’t be a woman a powerful woman, a proud woman without behaving like a bimbo.

This isn’t her fault; it’s the accumulated wisdom of a soft porn saturated mainstream that equates femininity with sluttiness. After the the VMAs, a few lonely voices asked why Thicke, a smooth practitioner of slow grind misogyny, hadn’t been criticized as roundly as Cyrus. He was, after all, the twerkee.

But in most contexts, male power is a given. Female power remains elusive. And in the cascading equivalencies of the entertainment industry, power = sex. Sex = sleaze. Sleaze = idiotic raunchy talk on national television. The fact that an ambitious young pop star puts herself in hot pants and blathers about the poor, sexless over 40s suggests nothing more than the increasingly seductive lure of the cheap. That’s the sad part. That’s the stupid part. That’s the part that matters.
